HEARING REQUIRED:  No Hearing Required

SUMMARY:

The purpose of the reallocation of funds is for the design and construction of two overhead low clearance warning systems on 17th Avenue, one on either side of the railroad trestle bridge (southbound and northbound).

The railroad trestle currently only accommodates vehicles less than 10 feet in vertical height clearance, from the roadway pavement to the lowest part of the bridge structure.

Public Works and FDOT have installed advance signage warning drivers that there are truck and vertical height restrictions along 17th Avenue, between Cervantes Street and the Pensacola Bay Bridge. This step now allows law enforcement to cite drivers who disobey the regulatory signage. The next step is to construct an overhead warning system that will physically alert drivers if their vehicle exceeds the vertical threshold and allow drivers time to veer off or turn around, before striking the railroad trestle, getting stuck beneath the bridge, causing property damage, and ultimately causing traffic jams.
