Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated every year on June 19th in the United States, commemorating the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This happened more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The delay was due to the slow spread of news and the reluctance of some slaveholders to relinquish their property. Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas and spread to other states over time. In 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas, and in 2021, it was declared a federal holiday in the United States.
Many cities across America celebrate in different ways. Some will hold festivals, parades, and other activities to mark the occasion. There are events happening right here in Pensacola this year. There will be a Juneteenth themed Gallery Night as well as other events to celebrate the Journey of Juneteenth. The funding for both the UWF Historic Trust and the Watson Family Foundation will be used towards the various events celebrating Juneteenth.
This item is being brought before City Council as an Add-On item in order to be able to provide funding to these two organizations as the events surrounding the celebration will occur prior to the next City Council Meeting in June 2023.
