SUMMARY:

In December 2022, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) issued a notice of solicitation of corridor proposals and funding opportunity for the corridor identification and development program (Corridor ID Program).   Funds are made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Corridor ID Program is a comprehensive intercity passenger rail planning and development program that will help guide intercity passenger rail development throughout the country and create a pipeline of intercity rail projects ready for implementation.  Unlike previous Federal intercity passenger rail planning efforts, the Corridor ID program is intended both to support a sustained long term development effort and to set forth a capital project pipeline ready for Federal (and other) funding.

The Corridor ID grant program is Step 1 of a 3-step process for implementation of passenger rail service.  Once a corridor is selected to participate in the Corridor ID program, the grantee does not compete for program funding for step 2 and step 3.  Instead, funding under the program is dictated by a grantee’s successful completion of a step.

The referenced application will include reinstating passenger rail from Mobile, AL to Tallahassee, FL, with subsequent phasing for Tallahassee to Jacksonville.
