SUMMARY:

Blake Doyle passed away on January 24, 2015, in a tragic accident leaving behind a wife, daughter, family and friends who were devastated by the loss. Doyle was known as a friend who was always lifting other people up in all walks of life. His passing was the catalyst behind his friends’ efforts to dedicate their time and resources to spearheading a community skatepark project in his honor.

Doyle’s friend Jon Shell started a 501(c)(3) called Upward Intuition to legally accept donations to fund the skatepark. Since the project began there has been an outpouring of community support. Two foundations have donated $100,000 each to the project including the Kugelman Family Foundation and the Gannett Foundation.

Jon Shell on behalf of Upward Intuition made a request to the Parks and Recreation Board in February 2023 to name the entire skatepark facility the Blake Doyle Skatepark at Hollice T. Williams Park. The Parks and Recreation Board approved the request. At the same meeting, the Board approved naming several other amenities within the skatepark area as well. Council approval of those items will be brought forward as a separate action item at a later date.
