SUMMARY:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) allows for roadways in the State of Florida to be designated for memorial or honorary purposes.  Currently, the Pensacola Bay Bridge, the Bayou Texar Bridge, and a portion of East Cervantes Street are just some of the Memorial Highways within the city limits.

The section of Bayfront Parkway from Tarragona Street to the new Pensacola Bridge is being recommended to be designated as “Pensacola Police Fallen Heroes Highway.”  This approximately 1.6 mile stretch of roadway is entirely in the city limits, passes directly by Veterans’ Memorial Park, and serves as a gateway to Pensacola, the beaches and points east of that location.

In order to be considered by FDOT, the Pensacola City Council must pass a resolution stating that the Council is in favor of the designation.  Then state senator, Doug Broxson, or state representative, Alex Andrade, would present the measure to the whole Florida Legislature.

Upon passage, the FDOT would fund and erect the signs.  There is no cost to the Pensacola Police Department or the City of Pensacola.

Designating this roadway would honor the sixteen men who gave their lives in the service of the City of Pensacola and be a reminder to their families, friends, current and former officers, and citizens that their sacrifice has not been forgotten.
