SUMMARY:
Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations International Conference on Discrimination against Indigenous Populations in the Americas.
There are currently over 50 municipalities and 9 States that celebrate “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” which is celebrated on the second Monday of October. This date is also shared with the Federal Holiday of Columbus Day.
This item seeks to recognize the City’s responsibility in honoring and valuing the vast contributions made to the United States by Indigenous People, their rich history, traditions and cultural contributions; this can be accomplished by designating the second Monday in October as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
