SUMMARY:
A request has been received to rename a portion of West Zarragoza Street, from Palafox to Baylen Street in honor of Fred Levin by renaming this portion as Fred Levin Way.
Mr. Levin was a member of the Levin Papantonio Rafferty law firm, joining his brother David and Reuben Askew after his graduation from law school. Mr. Levin worked tirelessly for the improvement of the City of Pensacola, Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties; working to improve the quality of life for all citizens.
Mr. Levin was well known for his philanthropic contributions to the community, playing a role in the building of the downtown YMCA, gifting the IHMC, establishment of the annual Fredric G. Levin Cancer Symposium as well as bringing world class doctors to Pensacola each year for 10 years to teach local doctors and health care professionals about the latest trends and techniques in thoracic surgery and treatment of cancer. His many contributions to UWF, including the Askew Institute and School of Government, many scholarships established and funded are all examples of the giving by Mr. Levin.
Through Mr. Levin’s foundation, his giving continued to benefit our city and citizens by gifting millions of dollars to local institutions and charities including the Gulf Coast Kids House, Sacred Heart Hospital, Escambia Westgate School and many others.
Mr. Levin passed in January of 2021. In recognition of his contributions and the impacts for the betterment of the City of Pensacola and the lives of its citizens, the Levin Papantonio Rafferty Proctor Buchanan O’Brien Barr and Mougey P.A. Law Firm respectfully requests City’s and City Council’s consideration in renaming a portion of East Zarragoza St. to Fred Levin Way.
City staff has reviewed this request and due to the limited length of the street naming request, the fact that it basically dead ends and there is one street address associated with this portion of the request and that address is to a parking lot. Contact was made with the owner of the lot who is supportive of the name change. Staff sees no logistical issues being present.
